Collaboration between NIC.br and PeeringDB is helping improve Internet traffic exchange in Brazil

PeeringDB is making available a database that facilitates communication between Autonomous Systems (AS); approximately 46% of Brazilian ASs have been registered with support from NIC.br

To improve Internet traffic flow both nationally and internationally, the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br) has encouraged Brazilian Autonomous Systems to become a member of PeeringDB, a database with information about international entities that are interested in exchanging traffic maintained by a non-profit organization. Brazil has approximately eight thousand Autonomous Systems, including Internet content and service providers, universities, banks, government agencies and other institutions, 46% of which have already been registered with PeeringDB with the help of NIC.br.

“The Internet is formed by various companies and institutions that are interconnected and collaborate with each other. This traffic exchange process between autonomous systems is called peering. What PeeringDB does is make available a database with information about ASs, datacenters (facilities), Internet Exchanges (IXPs), including details on connections, prefixes, policies, and other aspects that facilitate communication between those institutions that make up the Internet. This is a service that has become a point of reference in the technical community, and many large companies are asking providers that are interested in exchanging traffic with them to update their registration on PeeringDB”, explains Julio Sirota, Infrastructure Manager for IX.br.

As well as voluntarily helping Brazilian ASs that need support with registering with PeeringDB, the professionals from NIC.br also demonstrate the importance of the initiative by promoting training courses and events, by translating the material from them into Portuguese and by being a member of the PeeringDB Administrative Committee, which means that support requests from Brazil can be answered in Portuguese. The number of Brazilian registrations grew by almost 20% in 2019, with the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Ceará having the biggest percentage of ASs so far registered.

“IX.br is pleased to collaborate with PeeringDB because, in practice, we’re helping improve the exchange of Internet traffic, which is one of our main activities. It’s important that those ASs that have not yet registered with PeeringDB do so. In this way network administrators around the world will be able to make sure that the AS that’s asking to link up in fact exists. We’ll continue working to ensure that more autonomous systems become part of this community”, Sirota concludes.

According to Greg Hankins, Chair of the PeeringDB Outreach Committee, “working with NIC.br as a local partner has been extremely successful, which can be measured by the many registered users that Brazil has in PeeringDB”. According to Hankins, the intention is to continue the same strategy to evangelize PeeringDB in Brazil. “It has worked very well so far, and we want to keep up the good work that has been done”, he points out.
